DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY
general macarthur's speech to the west point academy class of ’62
submitted by jack hope, wwii veteran who still carries a copy in his pocket, and reports that the general delivered his speech without notes
IN AUDIO AND PDF

“Duty, Honor, Country: Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. They are your rallying points: to build courage when courage seems to fail; to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith; to create hope when hope becomes forlorn.” --General Douglas MacArthur, 12 MAY 1962

MOTHER’S DAY

ARMED FORCES DAY
15 MAY 2010

armed forces day was established in 1949 to celebrate the services being brought together under the department of defense. this day has been established as the day our nation’s citizens thank our military members for their service. there are as many ways to give thanks as there are individuals. offer a hand, offer your friendship, offer a job if you can. five years ago this may, pirate decided to offer thanks to military members for their service by creating a writing workshop for them, one that would be free and fun. this month, on 14 may, mcws/west at the west la va campus will meet for the first time. in june, the eleventh mcws/east will begin in beaufort, sc, and will be led by milspeak writers david ellard, vivian bikulege, and rich brown. we now have a literary magazine - you’re reading it ; a press - milspeak books; and we’re well on the way to establishing milspeak foundation as a vibrant, alive, self-supporting nonprofit organization. it is this gunnery sergeant’s opinion that master gunnery sergeant siedentopf has had god’s ear in the best possible way. we are blessed.
the craziest thing about it all? we still have no funding!
five years strong and we’ve done it on a dime. don’t that beat all?
if you’d like to say ‘thank you’ for the writing, the reading or the entertainment,
stop by the milspeak books storefront and purchase a book.
your purchase helps fund milspeak foundation operations.

ALL THINGS SIED
memorial day marks a full year since memo co-founder f.p. siedentopf began guarding st. peter’s gate. we’ve lost so many more this year to war, to age, to accident, but we keep marching on, in step with time, one step at a time, one day at a time

MAIN STREET RAG IS READING FICTION
Main Street Rag is currently looking to select as many as a dozen novellas to be published next year as well as stories for short fiction anthologies. The themes we are reading for are: Altered States, Villains and a collection of Sports stories. Because we are only reading for a limited time (summer), novellas may be submitted via email to our primary address: editor@mainstreetrag.com . Short stories for Altered States and Villains may also be submitted by email. Sports stories need to be submitted the old-fashioned way, by snail mail, but we will report via email, to save on return postage.
