The photograph above is of a young man who, as a Marine, served two tours in Iraq. In the article (read it by clicking on the photo), he is listed as a “SUSPECT” because he is suicidal. This is an outrage, an error of language usage that is unfair, demeaning, and downright wrong! The young man, already traumatized by a brain injury, is further traumatized by the media for having his identity plastered all over local newspapers! Rape victims identities are protected by law. Suicidal people should also have their identities protected by law. Military people who are seeking treatment for PTSD and brain injury should have their identities protected by law!
How can anyone be expected to recover from traumatic experience after experiencing public humiliation and being identified as this young man has been?
This is where our media must begin to step up to the plate on matters of ethics. Certainly, news is news - but is news worth the risk of ;personal devastation at this level?
Also of note, the veteran pictured above has tried to get more help through the VA! But has been unable to do so because our VA Medical system is overburdened and suffering its own version of PTSD!
Grass Roots organization like Milspeak and Veterans For Change work to pick up the slack, to make a difference in veterans lives as gap-filler services determined to save lives. Here’s a recent news release from Veterans for Change, which was founded by Jim Davis in response to the inadaquate care his father received through the VA after he was diagnosed with ALS associated with Agent Orange exposure during the Viet Nam War.
