GARDEN GROVE, CA – May 11, 2009 – Veterans-for-Change has a new mission to assist military veterans as a pro active group for change in the Veterans Affairs. Jim Davis, the founder of Veterans-for-Change would like to share the following compelling scenarios with our Government, the news media, and Veterans. The story is a dramatic scenario of Kristina Sawyckyj, a victim of rape by fellow service members, slander, and the victim of a system that has failed her.

Navy Reservist Kristina Sawyckyj resides in Colorado. She is a severely disabled Navy veteran, who upon discharge had an exemplary record and when she was discharged, she received an honorable discharge. Because of injuries she received in military service while on active duty in June 1988, [TBI – Traumatic Brain Injury] concussion, back and neck injury, she became unable to care for herself and applied for disability with the Veterans Administration. Later, she appealed their decision, asking for additional monetary consideration so she would get the care she needed and the income needed to meet her medical and financial needs. As a result of the appeal, the honorable discharge was changed to a dishonorable discharge, resulting in the loss of benefits and income. Now, she is facing eviction from her home, and she is losing her children. She will be forced to enter a homeless shelter when she loses her home. She still requires full medical care and is not receiving it now.

1. Veterans-for-Change would like to request a complete and thorough investigation for Kristina Sawyckyj, and the revoking of Veterans benefits, and the reported sexual assaults, and the investigation.

2. Veterans-for-Change demands prompt action into the events that resulted in 1) - the determination that Sawyckyj suffered TBI, back and neck injury and was awarded benefits; 2) – investigation into the DD214 discharge changed so the VA revoked her benefits, denying her medical coverage and financial benefits.

3. Veterans-for-Change requests prompt action investigating the report of assault or sexual assault, or any report of attacks documented.

4. Veterans-for-Change demands an investigation regarding the reported civilian court investigation occurring in Maricopa County seeking a restraining order of protection for the reported subject who is accused of the attack. Superiors reportedly failed to enforce this, resulting in extreme hostile working environments.

5. Veterans-for-Change, and Ms. Sawyckyj would like to request your assistance in getting all of these records straightened out and returning her original Honorable Discharge so she may regain her VA benefits, back pay, and restore her dignity and pride in the service of her country and the United States Navy.

According to statements made by Ms. Sawyckyj, she was not given access to her military records until November 2005. Those records, when received, revealed she had a severe concussion, and back and neck injuries. The VA gave a diagnosis of Post Concussion Syndrome and further evaluations labeled the injury as a mild TBI. She states her concussion happened while on active duty for training 25 June 1988. She further states she did not have those documents when she submitted her discharge challenge request. This November 2005 timeframe was after the 15 years established in law for discharge review; therefore, her discharge cannot be reviewed by anyone, as suggested by the VA. For the better part of two years, she has tried without any luck, contacting former Senator Salazar, and she has received rather rude treatment and no success, only to be “pushed off, told to go away,” and simply put in the words only the VA understands by silence and a silent motto of “Deny, deny, deny – until she dies.”

Veterans-for-Change would like to request a thorough investigation into the scenarios and events affiliated with the Honorable Discharge of Kristina Sawyckyj, the denial of benefits, status change of Dishonorable Discharge, sexual assault charges, and other events that resulted in disqualifications for the Veteran and what was promised her. She served her country well. It is time for the VA to honor her and grant her the medical and financial benefits promised.
